New York [US], April 18 (ANI): The UN Security Council held an emergency session on Sudan on Friday after reports of fresh fighting in Darfur displaced tens of thousands and pushed the number of people facing acute food insecurity to over 8 million.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher called the situation “the world’s largest displacement crisis” and urged unfettered access for aid convoys. A proposed resolution calling for a 30-day pause faced procedural objections from Russia.

Council members including the UAE and Sierra Leone pushed for stronger monitoring language. The session ended without a vote; a revised draft is expected Tuesday. (ANI)
